Overview

On January 17th, the Wilson Center's Brazil Institute convened influential health leaders for a roundtable entitled "Advancing Global Health." Attendees included Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), US government representatives, multinational pharmaceutical executives, and Wilson Center fellows. Following this dialogue, Brazil Institute Director Bruna Santos interviewed Dr. Barbosa to spotlight PAHO’s crucial role in safeguarding the health of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr. Barbosa outlined PAHO’s strategies for strengthening Primary Health Care in the region alongside the region's pharmaceutical manufacturing self-sufficiency. The discussion focused on PAHO’s critical role in the health of Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Dr. Barbosa emphasized G20’s role in fostering collaborative policies for clinical research and access to health technologies, and strategies for G20 countries to promote the transition to biosimilar drugs for cancer treatment, enhancing accessibility and innovation.

This event is part of G20 Dialogues, a project of the Brazil Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Through live broadcasts, articles, and events, we will analyze Brazil’s challenges and actions at the helm of the G20.
